The Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) is a new mandatory emissions trading scheme that aims to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted in the UK to help achieve the Governments 2050 target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 80% compared to the 1990 baseline.
Organisations that meet the qualification criteria will have to monitor their emissions and purchase allowances, sold by Government, for each tonne of CO2 they emit, based on the amount of electricity consumed through specific types of meters in 2008. Non-compliance could result in financial penalties or in the worst case a custodial sentence.
An annual Performance League Table will be published, showing the comparative performance of all participants. All the revenue raised from selling allowances is 'recycled' back to participants, either in the form of a financial Bonus or penalty.
